Research in Motion launched in India what it called its most affordable BlackBerry smartphone, part of an aggressive push in one of its few growing markets. The new Blackberry Curve 9220 is priced in India at Rs 10,990, higher than the price of Curve 8520, which is RIM's best-selling phone in India, and comes with an introductory offer to download free applications worth Rs 2,500.
The phone has a raft of features, including a dedicated Black Berry messenger key, and is loaded with the company's latest operating system (OS) 7.1 OS. The smart phone also has a built in FM radio.
The company is also offering many free applications with the phone such as pencil camera, photo studio pro and horoscope oracle worth Rs.2,500 for free till June 30, 2012.
The user experience is further enhanced with a long lasting battery, giving users up to 7 hours of talk time or up to 28 hours of music playback or FM radio listening on headphones.
The BlackBerry Curve 9220 has a dedicated key for accessing BlackBerry Messenger and FM radio, along with a 2 mega pixel camera, and works on second-generation mobile networks.
Curve 9220 has a 2.44" TFT screen, with a 65k colour display. It has 512MB of RAM, and 512MB of phone memory. It has an external microSD support up to 32GB.
RIM has seen fast growth in India as it expanded aggressively into the consumer segment with low-cost offerings and by positioning the device as a gadget for aspiring young professionals and even college students.
Smartphones currently account for just over 6 percent of total handset sales in India, a market which is extremely price sensitive and most use their phones only for voice calls and text message. But the segment grew 87 percent last year to 11.2 million phones shipped.
